Target Information
Chromosome 9 consists of about 145 million bases, representing 4% of the human genome and encoding nearly 900 genes. It plays a role in gender determination, with deletion of the distal portion of 9p potentially leading to male-to-female sex reversal.
Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, characterized by vascular defects, is associated with the chromosome 9 gene encoding endoglin protein (ENG). Familial dysautonomia is linked to chromosome 9 through the gene IKBKAP.
Chromosome 9 also contains the largest interferon family gene cluster and is involved in the translocation with chromosome 22 that produces the BCR-ABL fusion protein commonly found in leukemias.
