Background
The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to dopamine and serves as the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis. It plays a critical role in adrenergic neuron physiology. Mutations in this gene are linked to autosomal recessive Segawa syndrome. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been observed (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
