배경 (Background)
This gene encodes a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, which belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily. The CEA family includes cell adhesion molecules and pregnancy-specific glycoproteins located within a 1.2 Mb cluster on chromosome 19. Eleven pseudogenes of the CEA cell adhesion molecule subgroup are found within this cluster.
Originally described as biliary glycoprotein in liver bile ducts, this protein functions as a cell-cell adhesion molecule found on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia. It mediates homophilic and heterophilic adhesion with other subgroup proteins, contributing to tissue differentiation and organization.
