Background
Follicle-stimulating hormone beta subunit (FSHB) is a member of the pituitary glycoprotein hormone family, which includes follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, chorionic gonadotropin, and thyroid-stimulating hormone. These glycoproteins share an identical alpha subunit and have hormone-specific beta subunits. The FSHB gene encodes the beta subunit of follicle-stimulating hormone, which, together with luteinizing hormone, regulates egg and sperm production. Alternative splicing produces two transcript variants encoding the same protein. (Provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008)
