Background

Histones are basic nuclear proteins that form the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Each nucleosome consists of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around an octamer composed of pairs of four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). The chromatin fiber is further compacted by the linker histone H1 to form higher-order structures. The gene encoding histone H3 is intronless and replication-dependent, located on chromosome 6p22-p21.3, and its transcripts contain a palindromic termination element instead of polyA tails.
