Background
This gene encodes the alpha chain of type XVII collagen, a transmembrane structural component of hemidesmosomes—multiprotein complexes at the dermal-epidermal basement membrane zone mediating keratinocyte adhesion. Mutations are associated with generalized atrophic benign and junctional epidermolysis bullosa. Two homotrimeric forms exist: a full-length transmembrane form and a soluble ectodomain (LAD-1) generated by proteolytic processing. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
