Claudin 1-8 단백질은 세포 간 접합부(tight junction)에 관련된 막관통 단백질 군으로, 세포 간 이온 및 물 분자의 누출을 방지하는 역할을 합니다. 이러한 접합부는 상피세포의 극성을 유지하는 데 중요하며, 각 조직은 서로 다른 Claudin 조합을 나타냅니다. Claudin 유전자의 발현은 다양한 암종(유방암, 난소암, 간암, 요로암, 전립선암, 폐암, 두경부암, 갑상선암 등)에서 차등적으로 나타납니다. 또한, 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 변이체가 존재합니다.
