Protein phosphatases play a key role in this process, typically forming a trimeric holoenzyme composed of a regulatory, variable, and catalytic subunit. Major protein phosphatase families include PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin), and PP2C, with PPX (PP4) as a putative additional family member. The PP2A family includes subunits PP2A alpha and PP2A beta, which associate with various regulatory subunits such as PP2A-A alpha/beta, PP2A-B alpha/beta, PP2A-C alpha/beta, and PP2A-B56 alpha/beta.
