Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is mainly expressed in T helper cells but can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. At the tissue level, CD4 expression is detected in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of the brain and gut. CD4 contributes to T-cell activation through interaction with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck. It may also mediate neuronal damage in immune-related diseases of the central nervous system. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
