Target Information
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily and include three subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors regulate neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system. Studies in mice indicate that both alpha2A and alpha2C subtypes are required for normal presynaptic control of neurotransmitter release. The alpha2A subtype inhibits transmitter release at high stimulation frequencies, while alpha2C modulates neurotransmission at lower levels of nerve activity. This gene encodes the alpha2C subtype, which lacks introns in both its coding and untranslated sequences.
