Target Information
BEST3 belongs to the bestrophin family of anion channels, which includes BEST1 (mutant in vitelliform macular dystrophy, VMD) and other BEST1-like genes, BEST2 and BEST4.
Bestrophins are transmembrane proteins characterized by a conserved region rich in aromatic residues, including an invariant Arg-Phe-Pro (RFP) motif.
These genes share a highly conserved exon-intron structure with nearly identical sizes of the 8 RFP-TM domain-encoding exons.
Each bestrophin gene has a unique 3′ end of variable length.
