Target Information

UCP4 (Uncoupling Protein 4) is a 323 amino acid mitochondrial protein belonging to the large mitochondrial substrate carrier family with three Solcar repeats.
It functions as a mitochondrial transport carrier facilitating the transfer of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and the return of protons in the opposite direction.
UCP4 reduces the mitochondrial membrane potential and is involved in thermoregulatory heat production by creating proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis.
It is primarily expressed in adult and fetal brain, with lower levels in spinal cord, corpus callosum, and substantia nigra.
