Target Information
The NOTCH1 gene is part of a family of epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like homeotic genes encoding transmembrane proteins with variable numbers of cysteine-rich EGF-like repeats in their extracellular regions. Four NOTCH genes (NOTCH1, NOTCH2, NOTCH3, and NOTCH4/Int-3) have been described in mammals and are implicated in the differentiation of the nervous system and other tissues. EGF-like proteins such as Delta and Serrate serve as ligands of NOTCH1. Mature NOTCH proteins are heterodimeric receptors formed by cleavage of precursor proteins into an extracellular subunit (NEC) and a transmembrane subunit (Ntm).
