Target Information
Monocarboxylates such as lactate and pyruvate are crucial for cellular metabolism. Lactic acid, produced during glycolysis, must be exported from cells to maintain pH balance and glycolytic activity. This process is mediated by monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs), functioning as proton symports selective for L-lactate. The MCT family (MCT1–8) comprises transporters with 10–12 transmembrane domains. Mutations in SLC16A2 (MCT8) can cause monocarboxylate transporter 8 deficiency, leading to X-linked psychomotor retardation and abnormal thyroid hormone levels.
