HMG20A는 신경 분화 과정에서 염색질 관련 단백질로 작용합니다. HMG20B 억제 인자로서 역할하며, 신경 억제 인자 REST의 억제 효과를 극복하고 신경 특이적 유전자 발현을 유도합니다. 또한 히스톤 메틸트랜스퍼레이스 KMT2A/MLL1의 모집에 관여하여 히스톤 H3 라이신 4의 메틸화를 증가시킵니다.
