Target Information
ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is a hormone that plays a key role in stimulating the adrenal cortex. It is generated by cleavage of the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) precursor, which also produces other peptides such as MSH and beta endorphin. ACTH is secreted from the anterior pituitary in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. It promotes secretion of glucocorticoids like cortisol, but has limited effect on mineralocorticoids such as aldosterone.
