Target Information

Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The latter are major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, retaining crystallins throughout life, making them highly stable.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins form a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are subdivided into acidic and basic groups. Beta-crystallins, the most heterogeneous, vary by the presence of a C-terminal extension (present in the basic group). They can form dimers or heterodimers with other beta-crystallins.
The CRYBB1 gene, a beta basic group member, undergoes extensive N-terminal cleavage during lens maturation and is part of a cluster with beta-A4, beta-B2, and beta-B3 genes.
