Target Information
The PLCE1 gene encodes a phospholipase enzyme that hydrolyzes phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate to produce second messengers inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG). These messengers regulate cellular processes such as growth, differentiation, and gene expression. The enzyme is regulated by Ras and Rho family GTPases and heterotrimeric G proteins. It also possesses guanine nucleotide exchange (GEF) activity. Mutations in PLCE1 cause early-onset nephrotic syndrome, characterized by proteinuria, edema, and glomerulosclerosis. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
