Target Information

SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus causing illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death. The Spike (S) protein plays a crucial role in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a major target for antibodies, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.

The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors. Notably, the SARS-CoV-2 RBD has a higher binding affinity to ACE2 than the SARS-CoV RBD. The S1 subunit contains the RBD that specifically interacts with ACE2 receptors on target cells.
