Target Information
Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a membrane-bound protein that functions as the main transporter responsible for clearing the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at synapses in the central nervous system. Proper glutamate clearance is critical for synaptic activation and prevention of neuronal damage caused by excessive glutamate receptor activation. Mutations or decreased expression of this protein are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
