Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper cells but can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Tissue expression includes thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and specific regions of the brain and gut. CD4 functions to initiate or augment early T-cell activation and may mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated diseases of the CNS. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified.
