Alirocumab is a biopharmaceutical that received FDA approval in July 2015 as a second-line treatment for high cholesterol in adults whose LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) is not controlled by diet and statin therapy.
It is a human monoclonal antibody belonging to the PCSK9 inhibitor family, a novel class of anticholesterol therapeutics.
Alirocumab was the first agent in this class to receive FDA approval. The approval required further clinical trials to assess efficacy and safety.
PCSK9 inhibition promotes increased LDL-C clearance from the bloodstream.
