Claudin 1–8 단백질은 세포 간 접촉의 특수 영역인 타이트 정션(tight junction)에 관여하는 막관통 단백질군입니다. 타이트 정션은 세포 간 이온 및 수분 누출을 방지하는 분자적 개스킷 역할을 하며, 상피세포의 극성을 유지하는 데 중요합니다. 조직별로 Claudin 조성이 다르며, 다양한 악성 종양(유방암, 난소암, 간암, 요로 종양, 전립선암, 폐암, 두경부암, 갑상선암 등)에서 발현 차이가 보고되었습니다. 또한, 서로 다른 isoform을 암호화하는 다양한 전사체 변이체가 존재합니다.
