Target Information
This gene encodes the receptor for type 1 gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRHR). It belongs to the seven-transmembrane, G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family. The receptor is expressed on the surface of pituitary gonadotrope cells as well as lymphocytes, breast, ovary, and prostate tissues. Upon binding of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, it activates G-proteins that stimulate the phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system, leading to the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Mutations in this gene can cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH). Multiple transcript variants and isoforms are produced due to alternative splicing and multiple transcription initiation sites.
