Target Information

Kcne1 is a member of voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels, one of the most complex classes of ion channels both functionally and structurally. Kv channels regulate diverse physiological processes such as neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.

The Kcne1 gene encodes a membrane protein with sequence similarity to the KCNE1 gene product, belonging to the potassium channel, voltage-gated, isk-related subfamily. Kcne1 is an intronless gene deleted in AMME contiguous gene syndrome and may contribute to the cardiac and neurologic abnormalities observed in this condition.

Functionally, Kcne1 acts as a potassium channel ancillary subunit essential for generating native K(+) currents through heteromeric complex formation with voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channel alpha subunits. It also functions as an inhibitory beta-subunit of the repolarizing cardiac potassium ion channel KCNQ1. Diseases associated with KCNE1 include Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome 2 and Long QT Syndrome 5.
