Target Information
Secretin belongs to the glucagon family. This protein is an endocrine hormone produced primarily by S cells in the proximal small intestinal mucosa. Its release is stimulated by fatty acids or acidic pH in the duodenum. Secretin promotes secretion of bicarbonate-rich pancreatic fluids and regulates growth and development of the stomach, small intestine, and pancreas. Secretin deficiency has been linked to autistic syndrome, suggesting a neuroendocrine role in addition to its digestive function.
