Target Information
Mitochondrial peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) is an essential component of the steroidogenic machinery, mediating cholesterol delivery to the inner mitochondrial side chain cleavage cytochrome P-450 upon ligand activation.
PBR consists of three subunits: an isoquinoline binding site, a voltage-dependent anion channel, and an adenine nucleotide carrier.
It is genetically conserved from bacteria to humans and widely expressed in peripheral organs, with limited expression in the brain, mainly in glial cells.
Perfluordecanoic acid (PFDA) inhibits Leydig cell steroidogenesis by affecting PBR mRNA stability, reducing cholesterol transport into mitochondria and steroid formation.
PRAX-1 (Peripheral Benzodiazepine Receptor-Associated Protein 1) specifically interacts with PBR.
