Target Information

Ricin toxin (RCA60) is a 60 kDa glycoprotein consisting of two chains, A and B, covalently linked by a disulfide bond.

• A chain: Glycosidase that removes an adenine residue from 28S rRNA, rendering the ribosome inactive and halting protein synthesis.
• B chain: Binds to complex carbohydrates on the cell surface, facilitating entry of the A chain into cells.
  Without the B chain, the A chain has very low toxicity. Ricin is easily extracted from castor bean (Ricinus communis) and is highly toxic when inhaled, ingested, or injected. No known antidote exists, though a vaccine has been developed. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, with possible long-term organ damage. Due to its ease of extraction, ricin is considered a potential biological warfare agent, though less stable than anthrax.
