Target Information
Ubiquitin-like modifier involved in formation of autophagosomal vacuoles (autophagosomes). Plays a role in mitophagy, regulating mitochondrial quantity and quality by eliminating excess or damaged mitochondria to maintain cellular energy balance and prevent ROS overproduction. Upon cellular stress and mitochondrial fission, binds C-18 ceramides and anchors autophagolysosomes to outer mitochondrial membranes for clearance. LC3 proteins are involved in phagophore membrane elongation, while GABARAP/GATE-16 subfamily proteins are essential for autophagosome maturation.
