Target Information
Crystallins are divided into two classes: taxon-specific and ubiquitous. The taxon-specific class, also known as phylogenetically restricted crystallins, differs from the ubiquitous class, which constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens responsible for maintaining transparency and refractive index.
The CRYM gene encodes a taxon-specific crystallin protein that binds NADPH and shows sequence similarity to bacterial ornithine cyclodeaminases. Unlike structural crystallins, this protein binds thyroid hormone and may have regulatory or developmental functions. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
