SYNPO2L은 심장 및 골격근의 Z-disc에서 고도로 발현되는 세포골격 단백질을 암호화하는 심장 특이적 유전자로 처음 확인되었습니다. 이 단백질은 액틴과 결합하고 α-actinin과 상호작용하며, synaptopodin 계열의 구성원으로 Synaptopodin 2와 높은 상동성을 가집니다.
최근 연구에 따르면 SYNPO2L은 주로 근절(sarcomere)에 존재하지만, 핵으로 이동할 수도 있습니다. Zebrafish에서 SYNPO2L의 발현이 억제되면 심장 및 골격근 발달과 기능에 이상이 발생하여, 이 단백질이 근절의 중요한 구성 요소이자 근육 발달에 필수적인 역할을 함을 시사합니다.
