Target Information
CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen, CD66e) is synthesized during fetal gut development and re-expressed in intestinal carcinomas and other tumors. It belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family, consisting of one N domain and six immunoglobulin constant-like A and B domains.
Antibodies to CEA help identify the origin of metastatic adenocarcinomas and distinguish pulmonary adenocarcinomas (often CEA+) from pleural mesotheliomas (rarely CEA+).
CEA is a glycoprotein tumor marker found in adenocarcinomas of endodermally derived digestive system epithelia and fetal colon. The CEA family includes cell adhesion molecules and pregnancy-specific glycoproteins located on chromosome 19.
The encoded protein mediates cell adhesion and contributes to tissue organization, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and immune modulation. Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all are fully characterized.
