Target Information
Serotonin plays a major role in cardiovascular function and gastrointestinal motility. It mediates its effects through several G protein-coupled receptors known as 5-HT or SR receptors.
SR-2 receptors include subtypes SR-2A, SR-2B, and SR-2C, which activate phospholipase C and release intracellular calcium in response to serotonin.
- SR-2A: Involved in tracheal smooth muscle contraction, bronchoconstriction, aldosterone production, and linked to psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia.
- SR-2B: Expressed in cardiovascular tissues, gut, and brain; important in cardiac pathology.
- SR-2C: Mediates effects of atypical antipsychotic drugs.
