Target Information

The encoded Cathepsin L protein is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase involved in intracellular protein catabolism. It degrades substrates such as collagen, elastin, and alpha-1 protease inhibitor, a regulator of neutrophil elastase activity.
Cathepsin L plays roles in pathological processes including myofibril necrosis, myocardial ischemia, and renal tubular response to proteinuria.
It belongs to the peptidase C1 family and exists as a disulfide-linked dimer of heavy and light chains derived from a single precursor protein. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
