L1CAM (CD171)은 면역글로불린 초유전자군에 속하는 축삭성 당단백질로, 여러 면역글로불린 유사 도메인과 type III fibronectin 유사 반복구조로 이루어진 세포외 도메인을 갖습니다. 이는 단일 막관통 서열을 통해 보존된 세포질 도메인에 연결되어 있습니다.
이 단백질은 신경계 발달 과정에서 신경세포 이동 및 분화에 중요한 역할을 하며, 유전자 변이는 CRASH 증후군(뇌량 저형성, 지적 장애, 실어증, 경직성 하반신 마비, 수두증)을 유발할 수 있습니다.
신경 특이적 엑손의 대체적 스플라이싱은 기능적으로 중요한 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
