Background

E1A binding protein p300 (EP300) is a transcriptional co-activator associated with adenovirus E1A. It functions as a histone acetyltransferase that regulates transcription via chromatin remodeling and plays a key role in cell proliferation and differentiation. EP300 mediates cAMP-gene regulation by binding phosphorylated CREB protein and acts as a co-activator of HIF1A, contributing to hypoxia-induced gene expression such as VEGF. Mutations in this gene are associated with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome and may contribute to epithelial cancers. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
