Background
Drosha ribonuclease III (DROSHA) is a double-stranded RNA-specific ribonuclease and a subunit of the microprocessor complex. It catalyzes the initial step of microRNA (miRNA) synthesis by cleaving the stem-loop structure from primary miRNA (pri-miRNA) in the nucleus to yield precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is then exported to the cytoplasm. Loss of functional Drosha reduces canonical miRNA synthesis, and somatic mutations have been linked to kidney cancer.
