TFR2 유전자는 transferrin receptor-like family에 속하며, single-pass type II membrane protein을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 transferrin-bound iron의 세포 내 흡수를 매개하며, 해당 유전자 변이는 유전성 혈색소증(type III)과 관련이 있습니다. 다양한 대체 스플라이싱 변이가 보고되었으나, 모든 변이가 완전히 특성화되지는 않았습니다.
