Target Information

Functions in nuclear protein import as a nuclear transport receptor. Serves as receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates. Mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through binding to nucleoporin, followed by translocation through the pore via a Ran-dependent mechanism.
At the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binds to importin, causing dissociation of the complex and re-export of importin to the cytoplasm. The directionality of nuclear import is maintained by asymmetric distribution of GTP- and GDP-bound forms of Ran between cytoplasm and nucleus.
Mediates nuclear import of H2B histone, RPS7, and RPL18A, and prevents cytoplasmic aggregation by shielding exposed basic domains. May also import H2A, H3, H4 histones, RPL4, and RPL6.
