Background
P13288 BGLF4 protein (BGLF4) of Human herpesvirus 4 exhibits catalytic activity (ATP + a protein = ADP + a phosphoprotein).
It phosphorylates several viral and host proteins such as BMRF1, EBNA1, EBNA2, LMNA, and TOP2A, playing key roles in viral DNA replication and nucleocapsid release.
BGLF4 contributes to chromatin compaction during lytic replication by targeting host condensin complexes and facilitates the switch from latent to lytic replication by down-regulating EBNA1 replication function.
Belongs to the protein kinase superfamily (Ser/Thr protein kinase family) and contains one protein kinase domain.
Located at discrete sites in nuclei, known as replication compartments, where viral DNA replication occurs.
