This gene is one of eight associated with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL), also referred to as Batten disease. NCLs are autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorders affecting children, likely involving defective lysosomal degradation of post-translationally modified proteins. The primary defect is associated with lysosomal storage function.
