Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a protein to rRNA ratio of approximately 75%. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins of mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with three transcript variants and pseudogenes located on chromosomes 6p, 10q, and Xp.
