CHMP4B는 chromatin-modifying protein/charged multivesicular body protein (CHMP) 계열에 속합니다. 이 단백질은 endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) complex III (ESCRT-III)의 구성 요소로, 세포 표면 수용체의 내포 후 다소포체로의 분류 과정에 관여합니다. 또한 세포질분열의 최종 절단 단계 및 HIV-1과 같은 외피 바이러스의 출아 과정에도 기능합니다. CHMP4 하위계열의 세 단백질은 PDCD6IP(ALIX)와 상호작용하며, 이는 ESCRT 경로에서도 작용합니다. CHMP4 단백질은 막에 부착된 5 nm 필라멘트를 형성하여 원형 스캐폴드를 만들고, 외향성 출아를 촉진하거나 안정화합니다. 이러한 중합체는 다소포체의 내강 소포 형성을 유도하는 것으로 제안됩니다.
