CBS는 heme을 포함하는 유일한 pyridoxal phosphate-dependent 효소로, 특히 뇌에서 hydrogen sulfide의 중요한 조절자 역할을 함. cysteine을 이용해 hydrogen sulfide를 생성하며, 이는 신경 보호 및 신호 전달에 관여하는 가스트라트랜스미터로 작용함.
