Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS18B gene encodes a 28S subunit protein of the ribosomal protein S18P family. It is one of three human mitochondrial S18 proteins that share sequence similarity with bacterial S18 proteins. Pseudogenes of this gene are found on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
