Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S18P family, one of three human mitochondrial S18 proteins showing similarity to bacterial S18 proteins. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
