Target Information
Calpain proteinases are papain-like neutral proteases that are calcium activated. Calpains 1 and 2 consist of a large proteolytically active subunit and a small non-active enhancer subunit (calpain-4). Other calpains (5–15) are not known to require a small subunit.
Calpain-7 domain-N lacks the standard EF-hand calcium-binding domain, suggesting it may not be calcium regulated. Instead, it contains a sequence resembling domain-III of unknown function. Calpain-7 is widely distributed across most tissues.
