Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with about 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA and show significant sequence variation across species. The MRPL48 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene is located on chromosome 6p.
