Target Information

The accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) triggers the ER stress response. This response includes inhibition of translation to prevent further accumulation of unfolded proteins, increased expression of folding-related proteins (unfolded protein response, UPR), and degradation of misfolded proteins by the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) system.
HERPUD1 is involved in both UPR and ERAD. Its expression is induced by UPR and contains an ER stress response element in its promoter. The encoded protein has an N-terminal ubiquitin-like domain that may interact with the ERAD system. It interacts with presenilin proteins and can increase amyloid-beta protein levels upon overexpression.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, though not all full-length forms have been determined.
