Target Information

Toxoplasma gondii is a crescent-shaped sporozoan that lives as an intracellular parasite in various tissues of vertebrates and completes its life cycle in a single host.
It is transmitted via raw or undercooked meat, contaminated soil, or direct contact. Infection usually occurs in pregnant women or immunocompromised patients, such as those receiving immunosuppressive therapy after organ transplantation.

Infection affects the GI tract tissues and may cause fever and splenomegaly. Symptoms are generally mild, but severe lymph node infection or congenital toxoplasmosis can lead to blindness or mental retardation in newborns.
While infections are widespread globally, severity varies by region. In healthy individuals, infection is often asymptomatic, but in immunocompromised hosts, it can cause serious health problems.
